SOLAR ENERGY FOCUS
ABOUT FITS
As well as the UK Department for Energy and Climate
Change (DECC), FITs involves energy regulator Ofgem,
the Energy Saving Trust, all major and many smaller energy
suppliers and, most importantly, individuals like you and
me.
If you already have a small scale
electricity generation system, like
photovoltaic (PV) solar panels or a
wind turbine, or are thinking about
getting one, the Feed-In Tariffs
scheme (FITs) offers you a way to get
a guaranteed tax free return on your
investment for up to 20 years. Please
note that the FITs is not currently
available in Northern Ireland.
Microgeneration Certification
Scheme (MCS) is an internationally
recognised quality assurance scheme supported by the
DECC. In order to be eligible for the FITs financial incentive
your equipment must be MCS-certified if you have a solar PV
or wind generating system with a Declared Net Capacity of
50 kw or less or a micro combined heat and power generating
system with a Total Installed Capacity of 2 kw or less. The
address where your low carbon energy micro-generation
system is installed must have its electricity supplied by one
of the FITs-licensed suppliers.
Please note that this does not mean that all your electricity will be free. When it comes to solar
power, while you will be likely to obtain enough hot water in the summer without importing
electricity from the electricity grid, in the cold weather you will need to supplement the
electricity generated by your solar PV panel. You will have to pay for electricity at night
when your solar panels aren’t generating any. But you can still make the most of things by
using washing machines and other home appliances on sunny days.
